Rebecca RickardRebecca Rickard launched Rebecunica in 2020 as a result of some spare time during lockdown. She is a retired languages teacher living in King’s Somborne.
As a young girl, she loved sewing and continued to do so pre-children. However, two boys and a career did not give her the time to pursue this interest. Come lockdown, her sister-in-law suggested taking up dressmaking again. It started with ordering patterns and fabric online and then making face masks with remnants to match the garments. The Sewing Bee with its transformation task was her next inspiration. With being unable to go shopping and aware of the excess fabric from her makes, so Rebecca’s philosophy developed: recycling, re-fashioning and re-creating from pre-loved garments. The brand name of Rebecunica comes from her linguistic background: ‘unica’, meaning unique or one-off. This ethos has also led to making beach bags from discarded sails, saving some from the 60% which go to landfill every year. The handles are made from pre-worn karate belts. Rebecca will be selling examples of her sail bags and upcycled clothing at Chris’ Art House during Hampshire Open Studios. Contact: [email protected] |
